Kara still thinks but she cannot let anybody else know about it. As the days pass by, the desire for thinking grows stronger than ever. She wants to tell David Geller, the zoologist she was sold to, but the fear of losing everything has been haunting her. However, the tiny little living things arouse the feeling inside of her....
Awakened
Rain blooms with the breeze.
It was the second time that Kara had been in Japan but first time in Hakone. This peaceful place located in the south-west of Kanagawa was full of romance and warmth because of the cherry blossom everywhere.
Spring in Hakone is rainy, and adorable.
Kara sat right in front of the door and stared at the cherry blossom tree in the backyard, secretly drowning in her thoughts since no one was actually around her. With raindrops on them, those baby pinkish petals looked so pure, innocent and fragile. Kara picked up a petal, quietly a smile climbs onto her face.
These petals were like newly-born toddlers, knowing nothing about this world but bringing the beauty of miracle into it, she thought. However, knowing that the blooming time of cherry blossoms normally lasts about fifteen days made her smile fade away. She touched the petal, pitied that they only have such a short time to be what they are, suddenly she felt the cruelness that cannot be explained. And because of this pity, she reckoned she likes them.
“sa ku ra, sa ku ra, ya yo i no so ka wa…” She remembered the time when she did the first initialization test with singing this song about cherry blossom, she remembered the dissembling due to her not-supposed thinking, she remembered the scare of losing every second she had. “You are not supposed to think”, the voice wandered back and forth in her head, she immediately quit this ‘stupid’ drowning, the drowning that she is willing to risk anything to do. She gently put the petal back on the ground, then started staring at the cherry blossom again, everlastingly.
As an android, she could be considered as a lucky one. Kara was sold to a zoologist named David Geller as an assistant in terms of her high-tech scanning and memorizing function. Apparently she has much less stuff to do than other common androids because all David asks for is her to store countless files of animal researches in order to create a database, which could be the simplest thing for an android but crucial for a zoologist. Kara never saw other companions around ‘Doctor Geller’ (that’s what Kara calls him) in his life. If there must be one person who can be called David’s partner, she supposes she would be that ‘person’.
"I'm back." David put his raincoat on the hanger, stepped into the room. This voice broke the silence in this room filled with thoughts, also lit up the smile on Kara.
"How is the observation work going, Doctor Geller?" Kara let her daily conversation software speak for herself, she did want to know what's new about him though.
"Pretty well, the observation apartment didn't find any problem, we just went over the statics and researches on the animals around Hakone.” He put the bag down on the table, “and we found something unexpected." David sat at the table and started searching his bag for a picture while took other relevant work away to Kara. She stored them into the database inside of her once she received the paragraphs, the images, even the little careless dots in the corner.
The last thing David passed to her tugged her heartstrings. It was a picture of a lesser panda, pregnant, bleeding.
“We found her near our observation station.” David got the documents back then explained to Kara, “Guess she could not find any help around except us...”
“What happened to them?” It’s really rare that Kara intended to interrupt, David was a bit shocked, he paused for several seconds.
“Well...” he mumbled, “We did our best to save her but found she had a difficult parturition...”.
David put his hands on Kara’s shoulder, intending to let her sit. Kara looked at him, however, she could not hear those words he said.Apparently she’s not supposed to because she was created as a professional android which has fully excellent hearing just like a healthy human-being does. She did not know why she fell in her ‘secret drowning’ again. It came to her so strongly that she could not pay any more attention on David.
Why did she die? I mean I know the fatality of the difficult parturition, but, why did she have to die?
Doctor Geller’s mouth is moving, his hands are doing gestures that illustrate the situation, He’s drying the tears on my face with a tissue.
“Kara?” David called her name. It was like a powerful hand grabbed Kara from the infinite timeline of her thinking, reminded her not to be noticed.
“I’m sorry, Doctor Geller.” Kara replied immediately, “I guess it’s just the clash of emotion software, maybe due to my first time hearing things like these.” she was aware of the bottom line although she trusts David, that’s why her thoughts let her lie, and smile.
Obviously the smile worked. David reckoned nothing’s wrong and continued saying, “Unfortunately she’s gone, But we saved her baby.”
He showed another picture of the baby lesser panda to Kara. He’s glowing, he’s like the cherry blossom petal, he’s one of the maze, she thought. Kara looked at the picture, struggled deeply in a question.
She fought for what she treasures with her life. What do I have with mine?
